Consultants: How to Use Them Effectively

Consultants are the recognized experts in their particular fields. But are they a luxury or necessity? This presentation will discuss the benefits and cost savings of using consultants for everything from facility design, construction, and renovation to governmental regulations compliance, facility operations, staff development and evaluation. Interactive discussions and handout materials will help participants leave with information that may immediately impact their facility and its operations.

During this course, participants will:

  • Understand how to use consultants to save money for their facility.

  • Learn how to use consultants to improve the safety and risk management of their facility.

  • Learn how to use consultants to improve facility operations, comply with regulations, and enhance staff development.

Certified Pool/Spa Operator (CPO)

This course provides participants with the knowledge needed to safely and efficiently operate a swimming pool or spa. The topics covered in this course include liability and risk management, regulations and standards, pool calculations, water chemistry and testing, filtration and circulation systems, maintenance and management, spas, seasonal care, troubleshooting, and disease and accident prevention.

Participants are required to bring a calculator to class. Participants successfully completing a written exam will receive Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification from the National Swimming Pool Foundation, recognized around the world as the leading pool operator certifying organization.

This course satisfies regulatory requirements for pool operators. During this course, participants will:

  • Learn how to develop and use resources to enhance the operation of their swimming pools or spas.

  • Learn how to perform various swimming pool and spa calculations.

  • Become familiar with the various regulations and standards that govern pool and spa operations and where to get additional information if needed.

  • Understand the general operations and maintenance required for their swimming pools or spas.

  • Understand the importance of developing and maintaining proper documentation in the operation of their swimming pools or spas.

Filtration and Circulation Systems

Clean water is expected ... no, demanded by anyone using an aquatic facility. However, maintaining clean water is not always as easy as it appears. Clean water starts with facility design and ends with a properly maintained filtration and circulation system. This session will discuss the various types of common filtration systems and how to maintain them. Interactive discussions, models, and handouts will help participants understand the principles of filtration systems.

During the course, participants will:

  • Understand the principles of filtration and circulation.

  • Understand the advantages and disadvantages of common filtration systems.

  • Understand how to provide maintenance and seasonal care for filtration systems.

  • Understand how to troubleshoot common filtration and circulation problems.

Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Training

This course provides participants with the knowledge needed to safely and efficiently handle chemicals. The topics covered in this course include regulations, chemical handling, chemical storage, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), chemical spills, and emergency notification. This course satisfies the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) requirement for using hazardous materials.

During this course, participants will:

  • Understand how to recognize the dangers of chemicals.

  • Become familiar with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

  • Learn how to protect themselves when handling chemicals.

  • Learn the proper method for storing chemicals.

  • Learn how to handle chemical spills and disposal.

Lifeguard Training

This course teaches potential lifeguards the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to emergencies. Topics covered in this course include lifeguard professionalism, injury prevention, rescue skills, spinal injury management, first aid, and CPR.

During this course, participants will:

  • Understand the value of behaving in a professional manner.

  • Recognize specific characteristic behaviors of distressed swimmers and active and passive drowning victims.

  • Recognize an aquatic emergency and act promptly and appropriately.

  • Perform equipment-based rescue skills and techniques used by professional lifeguards.

  • Recognize and care for possible spinal injury.

  • Learn how to provide first aid and CPR.

Improving People Skills

Good people skills are not a "nice-to-have" ... they are a "must have". They can mean the difference between satisfying a customer to keeping an employee. This course will help participants develop a positive attitude towards improving people skills and provide helpful information that will assist them towards that goal.

During this course, participants will:

  • Understand why good people skills are important to profitable business.

  • Understand the importance of education in improving people skills.

  • Understand the importance of documentation in improving people skills.

  • Understand the importance of communication in improving people skills.

Regulations & Standards

Operating a swimming pool or spa is not as simple as just being knowledgeable of equipment and chemicals. Regulations and standards have become a major part of day-to-day operations. Compliance is not an option. This session provides an overview of the major regulations and standards that apply to the industry and describes the steps for compliance. Interactive discussions and handouts will help participants understand and comply with these regulations and standards.

During this course, participants will:

  • Become aware of various governmental regulations that may affect the operation of their swimming pool or spa.

  • Become aware of various standards that may affect the operation of their swimming pool or spa.

  • Understand the importance of education and training in complying with governmental regulations.

Risk Management

Liability and risk management are the hottest issues in the aquatics world today. But they are often the most ignored by aquatic facility owners and management. This session will address, in common language, how to identify, evaluate, and control risks in aquatic facilities. Interactive discussions and handouts will help participants leave with useful solutions to their issues and concerns.

During this course, participants will:

  • Become aware of why liability and risk management are important issues in maintaining a safe aquatic environment.

  • Understand how education is the foundation of an aquatic facility's risk management plan.

  • Understand the importance of communication in maintaining an aquatic facility's risk management plan.

  • Understand what types of documentation are needed for an aquatic facility risk management plan.

  • Learn where to find help to develop or improve their own risk management plan.

Water Chemistry: The Practical Approach

Maintaining proper water chemistry is not an option when operating an aquatic facility. The public demands clean, safe, healthy water.

However, dealing with water chemistry does not have to be intimidating or overwhelming. This session discusses water chemistry from the practical application perspective and includes an emphasis on calculations and problem solving. There will be handouts available that provide easy shortcuts. Participants should bring a calculator and pen or pencil to the session.

During this course, participants will:

  • Understand the basics of water testing.

  • Understand the principles of water balance and sanitation./span>

  • Understand how to calculate water balance and sanitation levels and make adjustments as needed.

  • Understand how to troubleshoot common water chemistry problems.
